What’s all the fuss about?
HPV (human papillomavirus) is the virus that can lead to cervical cancer. HPV is very common and you catch it through intimate sexual contact with another person. Because it is so common, most people will get infected at some point in their lifetime. We do not know why the virus causes cervical cancer in a few women. So having the vaccine is important to reduce the risk.
Why do I need the HPV jab?
Because the vaccination protects you against the two types of HPV that cause most cases of cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine can protect you from cervical cancer for years to come. Remember, you can have HPV and not even know it - so get vaccinated now!
Where do I get protected?
Full protection from HPV requires three vaccinations which are offered over six months. Where you go for your HPV vaccination depends how old you are. 12 and 13 year olds can get the jab at school. If you’re 14 or 15 and have not had the jab you can also get it at school. If you’re 16 and older, you can get the vaccination from your doctor’s surgery - just ring up and make an appointment.
